Summary:  Presented by our own Education Director. Iris Atkinson-Kirkland is the Division of Finance Director of Emergency Readiness and Response for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In this role, she is responsible for planning and managing the emergency preparedness and response for the Division in response to citywide medical emergencies including Public Health Emergencies.

Iris began in disaster recovery planning when she was an employee of Bankers Trust Company, (now Deutsche Bank) where she obtained her Disaster Recovery International Institute certification. Iris was a member of a newly created team charged with designing and developing the Contingency division within Global Funds transfer for business resumption and recovery plans for business resumption in Asia, Europe, and the United States. She was also designated to invoke disaster recovery exercisses and train international and domestic Global Funds staff.

Since that time she has gone on to become a certified Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and New York State Incident Command System (ICS) Instructor for 100, 200 and 700. She has taught ICS 100, 200, and 700 at NYC Emergency Management (NYCEM) and Nassau County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to DOHMH staff and to CERT members.

Iris is responsible to train all incoming Finance staff, Finance Emergency 101, and to train Finance staff and other ICS emergency response groups within DOHMH on Finance emergency policies and procedures as well as participating in table top exercises and drills.

Iris has a Master of Business Administration and an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Business Administration. She is a member of the Nassau County Community Emergency Response Team ( CERT), Notary Public, Paralegal and holds numerous certifications in contingency planning.
